ERA Chair

The main objectives the ERA Chair are sub-divided into four specific objectives which attainment will lead to the successful integration of excellent research and enhanced exploitation perspectives (of generated research results) to the benefit of both the local R&D and socio-economic community and the European Research Area as a whole.

Specific objective 1 – To reinforce Excellence in Research in the field of Net Zero Energy city Districts (NZED) through the successful achievement of an ambitious R&D&I programme

This specific objective aims at introducing measures, methods and activities to help to reinforce the excellence in research in the field of Net Zero Energy city Districts (NZED) at UMONS (within the Research Institute for Energy – RIE). The first measure will be the recruitment of the ERA-Chair Holder and the constitution of the multidisciplinary ERA-Chair Team in charge of the R&D&I programme. The Team will have to develop a long term research policy and project portfolio that ensures sustainability of funding, high quality research actions and long term vision with high benefit for society.

Specific objective 2 – To enhance the Innovation potential in the field of Energy, especially in NZED

This specific objective aims at introducing measures, methods, activities to favour valorization of the most promising results. Accordingly, this objective aims also to design and create a supporting structure based on a close collaboration between the ERA-Chair Team and the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) of UMONS fully dedicated to proactively lead “business development” activities.

Specific objective 3 – To improve a network around the theme to the benefit of the Institution as well as the main regional, national and European stakeholders in the field

This specific objective aims at increasing a dynamic network including regional, national and European stakeholders in the field of NZED. The aims are (i) to actively participate in key groupings in and provide experts in several commissions (notably for the definition of strategic research priorities); (ii) to develop company consortium in the field of NZED to take position in the new potential markets created by the technological developments; (iii) to develop demonstration projects.

Specific objective 4 – Assessment of the performance of the ERA-Chair model and evaluation of the replication potential

The last specific objective will be to monitor the performance of the ERA-Chair model. It is important to evaluate the success of the initiative in order to further improve its development and implementation, firstly, within the RIE in other R&D&I fields and, secondly, within the other Research Institutes of UMONS.

The Main expected results are:

  • Development of research capacity and research excellence combining different funding streams
  • Enhancement of competitiveness and excellence in research thus become active players in the ERA topics
  • Increasing in R&D key performance indicators (publications, patents…)
  • Increased participation of the institution in Horizon 2020 and other important European Programmes
  • Strong interactions with regional authorities (Walloon region) designing and implementing research and Innovation strategies for smart specialization in the field of low carbon built environment
  • Strong interactions with stakeholders for making them familiar with the concepts of low energy city districts and Smart cities
  • Technology and knowledge transfer towards stakeholders for ensuring the development of their activities within the new concepts
